PAPA, DON'T GO, 2018
In this digital art piece entitled, Papa Don’t Go, the illustration adapts Dylan Thomas’ poem Do Not Go into that Gentle Night into a visual narrative of a boy’s struggle to overcome the pain of losing his father. As the original villanelle addresses a dying father, urging him to fight on rather than submit to death, this twist narrates the dream of a boy urging his father to stay with him, in the world of the living. While the Thomas’ stanzas describe various men succumbing to the “night”, either making a difference in the world, or gaining insight into the world in their last moments, this boy sees his father as surpassing all the wise, wild, and good men who’ve lived, wishing in his greatness, he’d thwart the mortality of man.
